enough bad haircuts…

High school is when most people start experimenting with their hair. I was no different. The running joke was, “Yo!, did you ride your motorcycle to school today?!” This because my hair was styled straight up to the sky! It was really cool at the time. Trust me! I even let some friends help bleach my hair (More than once in the same day). I learned very quickly how bleaching works! I never seemed to want “normal” hair. In other words I found out all the things NOT to do pretty early on!

However like most peopIe I still went to a salon to get my hair cut. No matter if it were a cheap place, or a director of the salon, it was always a disappointment. Stylists couldn’t quite get it right for me. They would hurry and miss chunks of hair, not understand what I wanted (due to them not asking enough questions), or simply just half-ass the whole thing. So eventually I said, “ENOUGH BAD HAIRCUTS! I’m doing it myself!” So I got the clippers, went in front of the mirror, and gave it a shot! That was the turning point in my hair journey. My hair became an immediate hobby of mine. Each time improving just a little bit more. But once I gave some friends some “experimental” haircuts, I realized my artistic nature worked, not only for me, but for others.

So as my life went on (still doing hair for myself and some friends here and there) I worked at all kinds of places: retail, mall gigs, grocery stores, restaurants, etc. But especially sales jobs; from insurance, investments, banking, & even marketing. I believe this led me to be very confident in talking and working with people. So for that I was grateful. But of course it didn’t take long in each one of those career paths to hate each one. I felt trapped in a suit and tie everyday!

So after years of feeling stuck, it was time for a major change. It was between doing hair or tattoos. And after hearing from most of my friends, “Dude you already do hair. Just do that for a living! Duh!”

I decided almost immediately to enroll in hair school and then just get a bunch of tattoos! =)

Since 2010 I’ve been doing hair in Columbus, Ohio. I started at Waldo’s On High, which was known as an original hair salon in the Short North Arts District. The perfect area of the city for artists and individuals to create and express themselves wildly! Waldo’s was in business for almost 30 years! It was there that I built my clientele. It didn’t take long for me to be out somewhere, in a crowd, and hear someone talk about their hair. Immediately my friends would chime in with, “Well, Davey does hair!” Thus solidifying the name Davey Does Hair forever! And within 3 years time I was ready to take my clients to a studio of my own! Since then I’ve maintained a private studio allowing clients to receive my full attention and unlimited creative freedom!

With over 10+ years working for myself I’ve been able to do everything from hair backstage at fashion and runway shows to styling musicians and touring with bands that travel the world! Even did a family move to Southern California for 3 of those years in which I was able to add an extra dynamic for my clients’ style back home! Life in the industry has continued to be a blast!

I must say, becoming a hairstylist has been one of the best choices I’ve ever made in my life. And based on my tattoos, I’ll never be working one of those nasty old desk jobs again! ;)

Let’s hang and get that hair lookin’ fresh!
